"My home was flooded. All three cars were totaled. My Dodge ended up in a forest all crushed with other cars,"Amayasaid. He was one of the hundreds of people who came to Perez Elementary School Tuesday night to vent frustrations with city officials and learn about recovery efforts. "We know in our experience with West, Texas, and with the Bastrop fires and even being in Moore, Oklahoma, the response to the South Austin flooding has been significantly less than the efforts that we saw in the other disasters," saysKimberly Rigsbywith the Austin Disaster Relief Network , a group of churches coordinating volunteer efforts. The network is hoping to get 5,000 volunteers out this weekend to help in the clean upbut it can be messy work. Theyre urging volunteers to wear jeans, not shorts, and to bring hard-soled shoes and leather gloves. "I have heard some reports of families, especially children, whove been in the water day-in and day-out, almost a week now with no help,"Rigsby says. "Ive heard stories of children being sick or not feeling well. But as far as the volunteers who are coming down there for the day and then leaving, I havent heard stories of their health being negatively impacted." But Dr. Phil Huang, medical director for the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department ,urges people to take precautions. He says in a flood, its important to be aware of the kinds of water you might come in contact with. For instance: Clear water is tap or rain water. Gray water is from sinks, showers or tubs. Black water is contaminated from human or animal waste."If youre dealing, for instance, with black water, then you really need to make sure that you're wearing rubber gloves, eye goggles, and respiratory masks when cleaning," Huang says. "Change your work clothes and boots and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after you work in these contaminated areas." Huang also urges volunteers not to forget about mold.People sensitive to it could expect certain side effects.

Symptoms of Mold Exposure Individuals sensitive to molds may experience symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation when exposed to molds. Severe reactions may include fever and shortness of breath. Exposure to black mold does not always present a health problem unless the person exposed to black mold is immunocompromised. Stachybotrys chartarum is the infamous black mold initially associated with respiratory distress and the deaths of infants in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1990s. When wet, Stachybotrys looks greenish black and slimy, but can also look sooty and black. Its been associated with a number of symptoms some of which are highly controversial, including inflammation of the skin, cough, running nose, nose bleeds, a burning sensation in the mouth and nasal passage, cold and flu symptoms, headache, general fatigue, and fever. It may also cause pathological respiratory changes. Aspergillus niger is dark gray to black, looks dry, and is very different from Stachybotrys. Health effects associated with Aspergillus niger include allergy and infection of the respiratory system especially in individuals with weak immune system. Non-toxic black molds Black mold But there are many other types of black mold that are not toxic at all, although they could be allergenic. The most common is Cladosporium, which normally has no known toxic side effects. Cladosporiumis common both inside and outside. Most of us come in contact with Cladosporium every day with no ill effect at all. Symptoms from heavy exposure are usually an increase in allergy and asthma symptoms. Other molds that may appear black include Ulocladium, Stemphylium, Pithomyces, Alternaria, Dresclera, and Aureobasidium. None of these are known to produce highly potent mycotoxins; therefore, none of these are toxic molds but some such as Alternaria can cause severe allergy symptoms . Health Risks of Black Mold from Flood Damage - Yahoo Voices - voices.yahoo.com

Black mold can be split into two categories even though there are 1000s of different types. The two categories are toxic and non toxic. Non toxic black mold lives in non cellulose materials such as ceramic tiles, aluminum sink, plastics and glass. Toxic black mold, which some scientists link to respiratory problems, rashes, infections and maybe even brain damage, tends to grow on cellulose based materiels such as cardboard, gypsum board, wood and other porous materials. Thus, if you plan to do some diy black mold removal, you will want to first figure out what you are doing. Some, but not all, black mold found on cellulose based materials, can produce mycotoxins which are airborne poisons linked to asthma attacks, allergies and other illnesses. Asyou may not know how to tell the difference between toxic and non-toxic black mold, it is important for you to take all neccessary safety measures when dealing with its removal. Since black mold spores, either toxic or non toxic, enter our body through respiration, you should always wear a face mask. To create an immediate barrier between you and the spores, go for a highly efficient, filter type mask. It is a good idea, when cleaning black mold, to use an air purifier. Air purifiers are capable of removing toxic mold spores from the air which will give you another line of defence after the face mask. Thirdly, mist the surface area with a good quality disinfectant. It is difficult to effectively remove black mold from a dry surface, so spraying the area with disinfectant will help you in two ways. By moistening the area, scrubbing will be a lot easier to do. Disinfectant is also very effective at killing bacteria and germs and may even go a long way to killing the black mold as well. Black mold on non porous surfaces such as glass, tiles sinks, should be wiped off with heavy duty tissue paper or disposable rags and then put into the refuse sack. Once the waste sack is full, it should be securely tied so that mold spores cannot escape and you should avoid carrying the bag through other parts of your home if at all possible.

Remove Black Mold From Your Basement | Woodard Cleaning & Restoration

I was horrified. I thought it was safely stored away in a large plastic bin at the top of my closet. But when I pulled off the lid that was partially snapped shut, I found my green shawl-collar knit sweater covered with a bib of black mold. I quickly figured out my mistakes: 1) The lid wasn't snapped closed completely. 2) The top of my closet is humid and collects moisture, a perfect habitat for mold growth and a bad place to store clothing. 3) I need desiccants or silica packets in the plastic bin and my closet to absorb moisture. I learned my lesson the hard way. Thankfully, I was able to clean the black mold off of my sweater. And it inspired me to compile 14 tips on How to Protect and Store Vintage Clothing . It's a must-read so that you won't be horrified by black mold or any other clothing disasters anytime soon! Ever accidentally ruin a piece of clothing? Any tips for keeping your vintage pristine? "Dead Territory" (Project Zomboid) pre-release demo - Far Infrared Sauna Reviews

Donations and hopefully potential funding will carry through to the branch which we will then continue as a paid game, much akin to the alpha-ware distribution method of games such as Minecraft or Frozen Synapse where development will continue to add new features for the indefinite future. The free version will contain 4 cells, sizable map areas containing the suburbs of the city where the game is set. Random mission generation from other survivors, exploration, crafting and survival with some RPG style skills and level progression for the player character. The goal is just to survive for as long as possible, and we will aim to provide enough emergent game-play opportunities that gamers will make their own story, just as in games such as Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft, encouraging the same blog game diary and youtube viral appeal these games share. The alpha paid-for version will develop on these concepts in subsequent releases, adding a great deal of depth to the concept, providing the player with a deep and rewarding sandbox survival game: * More areas to explore, every zombie movie cliche environment from shopping malls, city streets, countryside, schools, police stations, hospitals, and old country houses. We will continually develop more environments, ultimately creating a massive playing area. And although the maps and some content are fixed, there will be a great deal of random procedural generation of missions, characters and items, providing much replay value. Each area will have different uses for defence, or for looting useful items to help you survive. From breaking into chemists or hospitals to get anti-biotics, raiding supermarkets for food or police stations, hardware stores and gun cabinets for weapons. * Advanced survivor AI provide a wealth of random missions involving reuniting them with their loved ones, to trading and finding medical supplies or weapons. They can accompany you and fight alongside you, or if defenceless can seek your protection from the horde. You will have to deal with depression, alcoholism, insanity, group conflicts, trust issues, suicidals and all manner of other situations in these bleak times. And do you know for sure one of your number isnt hiding a bite he got in your last encounter with the zombies? * Zombie Movie Sadist Director. The game treats the player like theyre in a zombie movie, and if they player has been shacked up safely for too long, it will encourage the player to get into new situations by rolling in the bikers to attack their safehouse, or making one of the players companions get sick, or setting off a car alarm outside their house. All to keep things interesting.

DIY Black Mold Removal In Your House Garage

Once it reaches a certain stage, it casts off spores which can be inhaled, eaten, or even absorbed directly through the skin. It is for this reason that many houses that have flood damage are condemned and made unlivable by the government until the mold can be removed. The major health effects of black mold generally result from fluid buildup in the lungs that leads to pneumonia. Pneumonia is an inflammation or infection in the lungs that causes the alveoli, or small sacs, to become filled with fluids, usually pus. When black mold spores get into the lungs through inhalation, the body mounts an immune response, and part of that response involves diluting the spores with water. This is what leads to the formation of the pus that fills the alveoli and causes the pneumonia. Another very common health problem associate with black mold is with the upper respiratory tract. Black mold, because of its structure, sticks to the mucus membrane of the nose and sinus cavities and causes an immune response there. The symptoms when this happens will mimic the common cold, but will progressively get worse unless the individual is removed from the environment. Over weeks, these will progress and will lead to symptoms like dehydration, headaches and nausea along with the URI symptoms of a runny nose and cough. Black mold has also been found to be extremely dangerous to babies, and produces a condition called Infant Pulmonary Hemorrhaging. In this condition, the lining of the lungs becomes so irritated by the presence of black mold, that ulcers develop that bleed into the lungs. This results in conditions similar to pneumonia and ultimately leads to the death of the child. Health problems related to black mold are easily prevented by making sure your home and workspace is free from the environment necessary to breed black mold. This includes making sure your basement is well ventilated and dry. It may be necessary to place a dehumidifier in the basement to make sure any excess groundwater does not feed the mold.

Without touching it, inspect the damaged area. Black mold will look like soot and may be dusty. If the job is too big, or you have health issues that could be exacerbated from addressing the mold issue, contact a professional cleaning service or moldremediationcompany and stay as far away from the area as possible. Dry out the damp space. Not only do you have a mold problem, you obviously have a moisture problem as well. Youll need to take as much humidity as possible out of the basement before addressing the mold; run a dehumidifier in the basement to pull out moisture. If temperatures are warm enough outside, open a few windows to increase air circulation. Running an exhaust fan from your window to draw out moisture and blow it outside is also helpful. If the mold is dusty, youll need to dampen it again before scrubbing. Those dusty spores are even more dangerous when they become airborne, as you run the risk of inhaling them. Using a spray bottle and cool water, apply a light mist of water onto the mold. Careful not to over-saturate, or else youll add to that moisture problem. With a bristled brush, scrub the mold with a solution of dish soap and water. With a clean rag, wipe the soapy area with a solution of bleach, water. Discard brush and rags after use. If possible, remove any moldy articles in your basement from your home entirely.

Stachybotrys Species ~ 50, see text Stachybotrys is a genus of molds , or asexually reproducing , filamentous fungi . Closely related to the genus Memnoniella, [1] [2] most Stachybotrys species inhabit materials rich in cellulose . The genus has a widespread distribution, and contains about 50 species. [3] The name comes the Greek words "stakhus" (ear of grain, stalk, stick; ) or "stachy" (progeny) and "botrus" (cluster or bunch as in grapes, trusses; ). The most infamous species, S. chartarum (previously known as S. atra) and S. chlorohalonata are known as "black mold" or "toxic black mold" in the U.S. and are frequently associated with poor indoor air quality that arises after fungal growth on water-damaged building materials. [4] Contents Stachybotrys spores 10 X 40 magnification under bright field microscopy Symptoms of Stachybotrys exposure in humans[ edit ] Exposure to the mycotoxins present in Stachybotrys chartarum or Stachybotrys atra can have a wide range of effects. Depending on the length of exposure and volume of spores inhaled or ingested, symptoms can manifest as chronic fatigue or headaches, fever, irritation to various areas including the eyes, mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and throat, as well as other symptoms such as sneezing, rashes, and chronic coughing. In severe cases of exposure or cases exacerbated by allergic reaction, symptoms can be extreme including nausea, vomiting, and bleeding in the lungs and nose. [5] [ unreliable medical source? ] The controversy began in the early 1990s after analysis of two infantile deaths and multiple cases in children from the poor areas of Cleveland, Ohio due to pulmonary hemorrhage were initially linked to exposure to heavy amounts of Stachybotrys chartarum . Subsequent and extensive reanalysis of the cases by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have failed to find any link between the deaths and the mold exposure.
